BIRTH CONTROL |

Hey You! It looks like you are interested in learning all about your menstrual cycle (signs, symptoms and everything in between) and your monthly hormone rhythmicity that makes it all happen. You are also looking for a naturopathic approach to your health and wellness goals, an approach that will be tailored to your unique sexual and reproductive health needs! Great, I've got you covered. The female body truly is a miraculous thing, and I am pretty obsessed with it, lucky for you I have made this my clinical focus and life passion.
First - did you know that the menstrual cycle is a women's fifth vital sign? A vital sign is defined as a measurement taken to help assess the general physical health of a person, give clues to possible diseases, and show progress toward recovery. A vital sign is reflective of the health of a system or systems and is a direct representation of the overall health picture of an individual. For women, the menstrual cycle is a window into the health of her endocrine system, specifically her hormone health. When disease arrises (thyroid, pituitary gland, gut etc.) her menstrual cycle will suffer. She may see longer or shorter cycles, painful periods, PMS, development of fibroids or endometriosis to name a few. When a women is on a hormonal contraceptive her hormone state is altered as is her menstrual cycle. She cannot observe or interpret signs or symptoms of dis-ease as her body is unable to communicate this fifth vital sign. The power of the knowledge a menstrual cycle can offer a women is profound. Systemic health concerns such as food sensitivities, allergies, gut dysbiosis, prolactinoma, and hyper/hypothyroidism can all be reflected and identified in a women's menstrual cycle. Furthermore, the use of her chart in collaboration with conventional and speciality lab testing can offer a reliable monitoring tool reflecting the day-to-day state of her menstrual cycle and association body systems. Pretty neat stuff don't you think?!
Okay, back to birth control. Perhaps you have recently started hormonal birth control but you aren't feeling like yourself. Maybe you just stopped birth control and are interested in an equally as effective yet more natural alternative. Maybe you have never used any form of contraceptive (hormone, device or other fertility awareness method) but are ready to better understand your reproductive body and learn the lifelong skill of cycle charting. Whatever the reason, I welcome you.
Birth control has been linked to a variety of acute and chronic health concerns. As a ND and women's health and wellness consultant I have worked with many women who have reported concerns such as: headaches, weight loss/gain, PMS, low mood, low libido, and a loss of sense of self. Furthermore, during their withdrawal bleed (that's right your days of menstruation while on a hormonal contraceptive aren't a true menstruation but simply the result of stopping your birth control and causing an abrupt hormone withdrawal) some women experience discomforts such as heavy bleeding, cramping and clots.
In practice I have cared mostly for women who have discontinued a hormonal contraceptive and are struggling to regain hormone homeostasis. Many women do not get a return of menstruation for months or even years later. Many women struggle with fertility issues for years after discontinuing the pill. Of most importance to me, as a ND is that most of the women have little understanding of how their bodies actually work. The menstrual cycle is something that happens to them without a sense of how and why. The birth control pill does not "solve or fix"any hormonal issue it simply masks the symptoms. How many times have you a friend or sister been told to go on the birth control pill because it will: stop your PMS, regulate your menstruation, help with acne, or fix your fibroids. Most of those women will come off birth control years later and be dealing with the exact same issues they had (possibly even worse!). I know, I know....the lack of options, of information, and the chance of getting a physician that actually listens to your concerns is minute. Fortunately, the body of research highlighting the danger and concern around hormonal contraceptives is mounting and clearly the movement for women to regain their reproductive and menstrual cycle health is here. (Yay!) Congratulations on taking the first step...educating yourself on your options.
The Justisse Fertility Awareness Method is a safe, effective, natural, and scientifically-grounded contraceptive option. It is 99.6% effective with perfect use (that is as good and even better than some hormonal birth control options). With curiosity, commitment and time you can learn how to identify your unique fertile and infertile window. Although the female body is complex there is a method to the madness, and understanding the physiology of the reproductive cycle (the first foundation established in the program detailed below) puts this and other fertility awareness methods into focus. This is not rocket science! Every women can and should learn how to understand her fertile and infertile signs. It just takes educating! Also, know one can take this from you, once learned, the skill of charting your menstrual cycle is lifelong and will truly transcend every reproductive stage you transition through.
So, it is simple. You have other effective birth control options besides hormonal drugs and devices. What are you waiting for?!
